Cheap Epoxy Resin Is Expensive: A Buyer's Case for Total Cost of Ownership

I don't buy chemicals by price per gallon anymore. Not after the $4,600 lesson.

I'm the office administrator for a 60-person industrial maintenance company. I manage all purchasing—about $1.8M a year across 25 vendors. That puts me in the middle: operations wants stuff that works, finance wants stuff that's cheap. Both are right. Both are also wrong.

Here's my position: unit price is not cost. The real cost is what lands on the invoice, what happens on the floor, and what finance never sees until it's too late.

If I put a $31 gallon of epoxy on a floor and it fails, I haven't saved $37. I've spent $37 plus grinding, new material, labor, and a customer who is not happy.

This isn't theory. When I first started this job in 2020, a new vendor offered a two-part clear epoxy finish at less than half the price of our regular supplier. I ordered 30 gallons. The purchase order looked great. Thirty days later, our crew had to grind off 400 square feet of cloudy, sticky mess. The product was cheap. The rework was not.

What total cost of ownership means when you're buying chemicals

I first heard “total cost of ownership” from our CFO and rolled my eyes. Then I built a list from an actual failed order. For chemicals, the full cost includes:

  • Base product price
  • Freight and hazmat fees
  • Shelf life and storage requirements
  • Accuracy of the safety data sheet (SDS)
  • Labeling and compliance documentation
  • Crew training time
  • Rework and liability if the product fails

That list changed how I buy. Now I ask for a landed-cost quote, not a per-unit quote. If a vendor can't give me freight and hazmat fees upfront, I cross them off. It's that simple.

This is also why I still ask for a current SDS on every order. Per OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200), each chemical shipment has to have a current SDS and proper labels. When I receive a vague or incomplete SDS, that's a red flag—even if the price is excellent.

Why Olin made it onto my approved supplier list

During our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I had narrowed our epoxy suppliers to three. Olin was one of them. Actually, let me be honest: Olin was the one I almost crossed off first.

When I ran a due-diligence search, I saw references to “Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation mesothelioma” in legal archives and historical case records. That's a reminder that the chemical industry carries a long, complicated history. I'm not a lawyer, and I'm not going to pretend to be one. What I did was ask Olin for current safety documentation, environmental compliance records, and product stewardship information. They sent everything. Every SDS was current. Every label matched the shipment. Batch samples tested consistently.

That's what I need to defend a supplier to my own operations team and to finance. It's also what our auditors expect to see in a vendor file. The history is worth knowing. The present is what you can verify.

I want to be direct about this: if you search the company's name, you'll find that history. You should do the same research on any chemical supplier, including the cheap ones. The point isn't to ignore history. The point is to check what the company is doing now with safety, transparency, and compliance.

The $37 difference that cost $4,600

The real turning point was a flooring job in November 2025. We had to coat a 36-by-50-foot bay in a distribution center. The budget brand we'd been testing looked fine in small samples. It failed in volume.

The 2 part clear epoxy finish cured with an amber tint. It stayed tacky in the corners. It blistered wherever the concrete had slight moisture. The facility manager had every right to be angry.

We reordered with Olin epoxy resins. The delivered price was about $68 per gallon as of November 2025—roughly $37 more per gallon than the budget brand. The budget brand had to be ground off. The Olin product went on clear, cured level, and let the crew finish in a day and a half. The cheap version took four days and still failed.

Do the math. The cheap gallon was $31. The work to remove it cost real money: labor, diamond grinding, dust containment, and a second set of materials. I stopped counting at $4,600. That number is stuck in my head.

And yes, I learned how to polish epoxy resin out of necessity, because polishing was the only way to salvage a section of that floor. Diamond-grit pads, wet sanding, patience, and a lot of noise. Do not sign up for it unless you have no other option.

Epoxy resin Canada: the freight trap is part of the cost

One of our sister facilities in Waterloo, Ontario, hit the same decision in late 2025. They needed a clear epoxy floor coating before a cold-storage room was restocked. A U.S. supplier had the lowest price by about $1,300. The border crossing, customs paperwork, and freight date were uncertain. The Canadian distributor was pricier but could guarantee a three-day delivery window.

They bought from the Canadian distributor. The higher quote bought certainty. If the floor had missed the restock date, frozen inventory would have stayed in limbo for three weeks. That cost would have been far more than the price gap.

That's the epoxy resin Canada version of the same lesson. Price matters. Lead time, paperwork, and delivery certainty matter more when a production schedule is on the line.

“But my boss wants the lowest quote” — I get it

I know what some of you are thinking: “That's easy to say when you're not the one signing checks.” I've been there. When I first started, I submitted a TCO breakdown that included a $2,800 rework line. My boss saw the higher unit price on page one and said no.

The fix wasn't to ignore budget. It was to put risk first. I now lead with the question: “What's the cost if this product fails?” If the supplier can't answer that, I don't care how low their quote is.

TCO doesn't mean ignoring price. It means putting price in context. A clean invoice, a current SDS, and predictable curing are worth money. Sometimes they're worth more than the entire price difference.

If you're not convinced, run a test slab. Order a small batch from the new supplier, apply it the way the crew would, and wait a week. That test costs a few hundred dollars in material and labor. It beats spending a few thousand on a floor you have to rip out.

Buy the system, not the gallon

I know this sounds like a lecture from someone who has too many spreadsheets. Maybe. But I've also carried a grinder across a ruined floor, wearing a respirator, wondering why I ordered the cheap resin.

Cheap is expensive. Not always—but often enough that it should be your default suspicion. For epoxy resins, for 2 part clear epoxy finishes, for any chemical order that ends up on a critical surface, buy the system that works, not the gallon that's on sale.

That's why I keep Olin on my approved list. The price isn't the lowest. The documentation is clean, the product performs, and the supply chain is predictable. In my world, that's exactly what a premium means.
