When I took over purchasing in 2021, I did what most nontechnical people do: I typed exactly what I needed into a search bar. Epoxy to fill holes in concrete is the phrase that first led me to the Olin login page—not because I understood epoxy resin chemistry, but because someone in our plant needed a concrete floor fixed and Olin lists industrial epoxy products. But that same month, another team asked about resin flooring for our production area, and somewhere in my head the two requests became one category. They are not close to the same. One is a repair. The other is a full floor system, with primers, base coats, topcoats, curing requirements, and surface prep that matters just as much as the material.
That is the surface problem. Most people who search don't need a chemical; they need an outcome. But in industrial purchasing, an outcome is not a line item that a supplier can ship.
Epoxy Is a Family Name, Not a Formula
I remember calling Olin after digging through the site and asking, Which epoxy do I use to fill holes in concrete? The person on the line was professional, but I could hear that the question needed more context.
Epoxy is a family. Olin makes epoxy resins and related intermediates used by formulators to produce adhesives, coatings, sealers, and resin flooring systems. A raw liquid epoxy resin won't harden by itself; it needs a curing agent. And a resin-plus-hardener combination is still not automatically a concrete filler. Add aggregate, and it becomes a mortar. Change the hardener, and you get a flexible coating, a self-leveling floor, or a high-build patch.
No wonder keyword searches miss. Epoxy to fill holes in concrete sounds specific, but it leaves out the variables that actually matter. How deep are the holes? Is the surface wet? Will the area see forklift traffic? Does it need to resist chemicals? If the answer changes, the product changes.

Resin flooring pushed me even further. My initial assumption was that it meant a thick layer of epoxy painted onto concrete. That assumption was wrong.
A resin floor is normally a multi-layer system. The primer has to bond to the concrete. The body coat builds thickness and hides the surface. The topcoat supplies slip resistance, color, and chemical protection. If the primer doesn't match the substrate, or if the topcoat is too brittle for thermal cycling, the floor can delaminate in sheets. In my case, a two-week installation turned into a six-week correction because two somebodies skimmed over that sequence.
What does that have to do with a buyer? Everything. If I order epoxy without mentioning substrate, moisture, traffic, or expected chemical exposure, no vendor can pick the right system. They can only pick a product that fits the words I gave them.
The Is Caustic Soda Question Is a Warning Sign
The search phrase is caustic soda usually comes from someone who knows the words but not the molecule. Short answer: caustic soda is sodium hydroxide, or NaOH. It is a strong alkali used in water treatment, chemical processing, pulp and paper, cleaning, and pH control. Olin is one of the major producers, and I've put caustic soda on purchase orders more times than I can count.
The longer answer is where buyers get in trouble. Caustic soda is not just one thing. It comes in different concentrations and industrial grades. The concentration changes the handling requirements, the freezing point, the packaging, and to some degree the acceptable applications. At industrial concentrations, it is corrosive. If you are asking whether caustic soda is dangerous, the responsible answer is to read the safety data sheet before you receive the drum. If a supplier can't provide an SDS before a shipment arrives, that is a red flag.
OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) requires SDSs to be accessible to workers who handle hazardous chemicals. That has become my first document check before I finalize an order. It saves arguments later.
The Cost of Ordering by Name Instead of Conditions
I know this because I made the expensive version of this mistake.
We bought a concrete repair product that was never designed for the chemical exposure on our floor. It looked fine for the first few weeks—then softened, peeled, and had to be removed. The purchase price was the smallest number in the whole project. Resurfacing labor, downtime, disposal, and repeated scheduling made it costly. The material failed not because it was low quality, but because the application conditions were outside its spec.
I also dealt with a vendor who couldn't provide proper documentation on a caustic soda order. No SDS, no certificate of analysis, just a promise that it was standard material. Finance rejected the invoice, and the material sat in our receiving area while we sorted it out. That $2,400 order turned into a $2,400 lesson plus three lost days.
Those two failures changed how I think about purchasing. The intended use, the environment, and the paperwork are not overhead. They are the product.
What I Do Before I Click the Olin Login Now
I don't expect a keyword search to choose the material for me. Before I log in, I write down three things: the exact physical problem I am solving, what the material will touch, and what documentation I need. Then I use the Olin login to look at the actual product family, pull the technical datasheet, and ask a human when a term like resin flooring could mean more than one thing.
