For the past six years, I've handled raw-material purchasing for an industrial coatings company. We're not a global business. We're roughly 40 people, and we formulate and package epoxy concrete floor coatings for warehouses, maintenance shops, and food plants. I manage a materials budget of around $180,000 a year, which means I don't get to fall in love with a brand. I track every order in a spreadsheet: price, freight, payment terms, lead time, hidden charges, and how many calls it took to get a straight answer.
After all that tracking, I believe the phrase big chemical companies don't care about small buyers has cost mid-size formulators more money than most price differences between suppliers. I almost fell for it myself with Olin.
Why I started with the wrong mental picture
When our lead formulator first said we should qualify Olin's liquid epoxy resin for our coatings line, I had the same reaction a lot of people have: Olin? The ammunition people?
That night I ran a search I now think half of Olin's potential customers probably run: olin mathieson chemical corporation ammo. It dropped me into a long corporate history connecting the current Olin name with the old Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation and with the Winchester ammunition side of the business. It was the kind of history that makes a small buyer think those contracts are measured in railcars and government purchase orders, not pallets.
The history is real, but it was the wrong filter. The industrial side of that family tree is also enormous. Olin is a major producer of chlor-alkali chemicals and epoxy resins, and those products are sold into coatings and construction markets where most buyers are not giant multinationals. A 40-person coatings company can be a completely normal customer in that world, not a nuisance.
The one-pallet test
History alone did not convince me. Plenty of large companies talk about serving mid-market customers and then act differently when a small order actually shows up.
So in March 2024 we ran the only test that should matter to a purchasing manager. I put a small trial order through the same process we use for any new resin source. One pallet of liquid epoxy resin, a smaller drum of hardener, a request for a certificate of analysis, a request for the SDS, and questions about lot traceability and shelf life. Nothing huge.
To be clear, we did not try to open a direct manufacturing account. We ordered through the industrial distributor that carries the Olin epoxy grade we wanted. That route is normal for a company our size, and it changes the way you should think about the manufacturer. I was not expecting a personal phone call from a vice president. I was expecting a clean, professional transaction.
The responses came back about as fast as responses from smaller suppliers. No, wait, that's not quite the right way to say it. The response time was similar. The difference was in the document quality. The certificate matched the lot number. The SDS was current. The technical data sheet answered the questions our chemist actually asked. For a small formulator, that level of consistency is not a luxury. It is a cost saver.
The trial order did not get special treatment. That is exactly the point. What I needed was normal treatment: accurate paperwork, clear communication, and a product that met the stated specification. That is what we got.
What I now tell customers who ask about epoxy resin toxicity
Because we make epoxy concrete floor coatings, at least once a month a customer asks: is epoxy resin toxic when dry? I used to treat that as a purely technical question. It has a procurement dimension too.
The plain-language answer is that once a two-part epoxy system has fully cured, the resin and hardener have reacted into a cross-linked plastic. A cured epoxy film is not generally considered toxic when dry. The hazards people actually need to respect are in the liquid and application stage: uncured epoxy resin and amine hardeners can cause skin sensitization, and fresh applications need gloves and ventilation. If someone later sands or grinds the cured coating, the fine dust is another reason to wear respiratory protection, but that is true of concrete and most coating dusts.
Why does this belong in a buying decision? Because the way a supplier answers safety questions tells you a lot. A careless supplier will say everything is non-toxic with no paperwork behind it. A professional supplier sends the current SDS and tells you exactly what to avoid. Under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, which appears in 29 CFR 1910.1200, that documentation has to be there. But there is a difference between technically available and genuinely easy to get for a smaller order. I found the Olin documentation easy to get, and that saved us time, confusion, and liability questions from our own customers.
The caveats I would raise if I were reading this
Now I should give the other side the mic. First, my sample is not infinite. I want to say we have run about fifteen order cycles through that route, but do not quote me on the exact count. If you buy in a different region or a different product category, your experience may differ.
Second, my experience is in industrial coatings and construction materials. It does not transfer automatically to agricultural chemistry. If your search history includes something like crystal crop protection products, you are in a different regulatory world, with different registration rules, residue limits, and distribution expectations. I would not take a floor-coating essay as a recipe for that industry.
Third, and this is the fairest objection: we do not buy directly from Olin. We buy through a distributor. Maybe what I am really praising is the distributor's small-order service. That is a fair criticism. But it still supports my broader point. A mid-size buyer should not rule out a technically strong material because of assumptions about what the manufacturer will or will not do. Ask your distributor. Ask for a sample. Run the numbers. Let the quote tell you whether it works.

For us, the bottom line was unglamorous. Olin is a large chemical company, but the products we use are standard epoxy grades sold through the same channels that serve smaller coating manufacturers. The idea that we were too small for that conversation turned out to be an assumption, not a fact. I have learned more from invoices and certificates of analysis than from reputation. If you are comparing suppliers for epoxy concrete floor coatings or similar resin systems, do the same: check the specification, check the paperwork, and let total cost make the decision.
